Blaine (22-5-1) won both regular season meetings against crosstown rival Centennial (16-10-2) but the No. 3 seeded Cougars upset No. 1 Blaine to win the Section 5AA title 2-1.
The Warner Coliseum at the State Fairgrounds is anything but festive for Blaine (20-6-1) as the last two trips to the Section 5AA boys’ hockey venue have spelled an end to otherwise promising seasons.
Spring Lake Park, Andover, Anoka and Blaine each ended the 2012-13 season in the Section 5AA quarterfinals Feb. 9.

Blaine hockey fans might want to skip straight over this result. Maple Grove, the top-seed in Section 5AA, thoroughly dispatched No. 2 seed Blaine 15-1 in a debacle of a boys’ hockey game played at the Warner Coliseum on the State Fairgrounds March 2.
Blaine searched for a way to hand Anoka a third defeat this season and it came in the form of a 6-3 boys’ hockey victory in the Section 5AA semifinals.
