A two-year Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response grant that allowed the Spring Lake Park-Blaine-Mounds View Fire Department to hire four full-time firefighters for daytime response expired Sept. 11 before an application to renew the grant became available.
Doug Nelson did not anticipate a long-range career when he volunteered for the Spring Lake Park-Blaine-Mounds View Fire Department in December 1990, but he eventually earned a coveted full-time position and is now retiring from the department after 23 years.
