The Coon Rapids Lions Club will be hosting its fourth annual Lions at The Park open house at Lions Coon Creek Park Saturday, Sept 7, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
This event will feature games, guests and a free meal for over 200 people prepared by award-winning UP NORTh BBQ. It is open to anyone interested in stopping by the park Sept. 7.
“This event is a way for the Coon Rapids Lions to say ‘thank you’ for all the support the community has provided the club for the past 60 years,” said Beth and Dan Janish, event chairpersons.
“The event also provides the club with an opportunity to show to the public what it has been doing in our community in the form of projects, activities, as well as donating time and money to many worthwhile groups and individuals.
The club will be collecting used eyeglasses and hearing aids to be distributed to those persons in need throughout the world as well as collecting non-perishable foods and winter coats for the ACBC Food Shelf.
In addition, the Lions have worked for many years with Camp Friendship, a camp near Annandale for teens and adults with physical and mental challenges, and are helping the camp restock its “costume/dress up” closet, which the campers use for dances and other fun events.
“The Lions are asking everyone to check their closets and to donate any bridesmaid dresses, sport coats, hats, suits, Halloween costumes, costume jewelry, party dresses or anything that is fun and even frivolous that they would like to part with,” the Janishes said.
Besides the Lions booths at the event, exhibitors at the open house will include some long-supported groups such as the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, Camps Courage and Friendship, the Coon Rapids Fire Department and its kitchen fire trailer, plus Officer Mark McDonough from the Coon Rapids Police Department with police dog Buddy.
New exhibitors this year will include Stepping Stone Emergency Housing and Mary T, Inc. There will be face painting, games for all ages, a photo opportunity for attendees to be a Lion and a garden tour.
