Bicentennial tree planting      

Johnsville Principal Harlan Danner planted the second tree in the state Friday under the Marine Corps Bicentennial tree planting project. Gov. Wendell Anderson planted the first tree Nov. 10. The project, coordinated with the Department of Forestry, calls for the planting of two million trees by July.

Watchdog stabbed in Blaine

“Nuggets,” the family watchdog at the Peterson’s residence in Blaine, was challenged to defend his owner’s property when an intruder entered the Petersons’ warehouse late last Friday evening, April 25. Nuggets received multiple stab wounds to his face and stomach but survived his attacker’s assault.

Merriam to be roasted

Gene Merriam will be roasted May 9. Merriam is retiring this winter after serving constituents of Anoka County in the Minnesota Senate for 22 years. The DFL chairman of the Senate Finance Committee represents District 49, which includes Anoka and most of Coon Rapids. He is not seeking re-election this fall. The MetroNorth/Anoka County Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a Gene Merriam Roast at Majestic Oaks Thursday, May 9.
