Expansions are coming to the Anoka County Special Weapons and Tactics team, with a Joint Powers Agreement approved by the Anoka City Council helping to do just that. The Anoka Police Department will designate six officers and one crisis negotiator to the team, helping it reach National Tactical Officers Association Tier One status.
“The sheriff is expanding SWAT team membership to Tier One,” Anoka Police Chief Eric Peterson said at the council’s Feb. 20 meeting. “NTOA defines a Tier One team as 34 members and a FEMA Type One team has at least 29. To accomplish these staffing levels, a decision was made by Anoka County chiefs to partner with other agencies to help make it a county-wide asset as well as improving relationships and skills in our agencies.”
